5/2/08 Hats On Day, Monticello High School, Monticello, IL
Monticello High School students raised $500 to support the new Piatt County Animal Shelter with their Hats On Day fundraiser.
Jennifer Cekander, Student Council advisor, helped organize this simple but extremely effective fundraising event: For a donation of $1.00, any Monticello High School student could wear a hat to school on Friday, May 2nd. The Student Council matched all donations as well as held a variety of contests.
 |
Winner of:
- Best overall hat: Dillon Docherty (shown)
- Biggest hat: Luke Smith
- Funniest hat: Luke Dunn
- Ugliest hat: Peter Thilmony
Winners received a $25 gift card to Subway or Mobil Super Pantry (their choice).
In addition, Samantha Thompson won a $50 gift card when, appropriately enough, a Student Council member drew her name from a hat.

5/3/08 May Market, Downtown Monticello, IL

 |
On May 3rd, a handful of dedicated volunteers braved cold and gale-force winds to represent the Piatt County Animal Shelter at Monticello's May Market celebration.
Bottom line: Barbara Garlick, Rick and Deb Davis, Diana McPheeters, Tanya Reno, and Heather Terhark raised almost $500 to help build the new shelter at The Pontious Farm.
Best-seller: Two-foot-tall Japanese Maple trees Peter Garlick grew from four-inch seedlings over the last four years. Also a hit: Rick and Deb's handmade table covers and Tanya's pot-a-plant table for kids.
