OK, one could argue the half-page story with the huge headline Animal shelter finds a home on the front page of the January 23, 2008 edition was news. And, after all, news is the business of the Piatt County Journal-Republican, a newspaper published every Wednesday as part of the News-Gazette Community Newspaper division.
How about the January 16, 2008 editorial on the community's need to support the mission of the fledgling Piatt County Animal Shelter not-for-profit organization? Is that standard operating procedure for a community newspaper? Maybe, maybe not.
Then how about:
- Naming the Piatt County Animal Shelter charity of the month in the News-Gazette Community Newspaper division's monthly newsletter sent to all division personnel? End result: Increased awareness and much-needed donations.
- Donating a portion of the proceeds from Illini book sales to the Piatt County Animal Shelter?
Definitely above and beyond the call of duty!
But, as Editor Michelle Hansen admitted, staff pets Sancho, Skyler, and Reus demanded nothing less.

Whenever you see one of those brightly colored, paper pawprints posted
throughout Piatt County, think Fasprint.
Fasprint produces sheet upon sheet of these mini-fundraisers free of charge for the Piatt County Animal Shelter. But that's just one of the many things this all-purpose printing and marketing services business does to help support the Piatt County Animal Shelter mission. As owner Scott Hutson says, "Fasprint does everything except counterfeit currency!"
Scott is no stranger to helping animals. Every animal joining his family during Scott's adult years came from a humane society, including Lilly, a four-year-old Lab/Border Collie mix Scott adopted from a Louisville, KY humane society. Scott just lost Lilly's 22-year-old feline companion, so Scott may be in the market for another playmate for Lilly very soon.
Pat Howard, Scott's business partner, is also an animal lover and breeds English Cocker Spaniels. In fact, many Fasprint employees in both the Monticello and Champaign locations, have pets, including Jan Bentley, who has several cats and actively volunteers at the Piatt County Animal Shelter.
The Piatt County Animal Shelter thanks Scott, Pat, Jan, and everyone else at Fasprint for supporting our cause.
