Volume 1, No. 1, March 10, 2008

Welcome to the first issue of the PCAS e-newsletter!

In this and future issues, we'll bring you progress reports, meeting announcements, and information about fund-raising and other activities.

We'll also include subtle (and not-so-subtle!) pleas for

  • donations of time, services, labor, supplies, and money (especially supplies and money)
  • help with fundraising activities and grant writing
  • assistance in spreading the word about the shelter

Visit our web site, www.piattanimals.org, for more information about what we need — and what you can do.

We encourage readers to share this newsletter. Forward it to co-workers, family, friends, and others who care about animals and their welfare. Ask them to subscribe by e-mailing newsletter editor Peggy Currid (currid@gmail.com) and requesting to be added to the mailing list. (E-mail addresses will not be sold, shared, or distributed outside PCAS.)

Another thing you can do to help:

  • IF you have your own web site or have a friend who has his or her own web site
  • AND IF you (or your friend) can think of a LOGICAL reason to link to our web site (such as "See what our friends are up to in central Illinois …")

We'd really appreciate the link to www.piattanimals.org.

Help us spread the word. The welfare — and lives — of countless animals in Piatt County depend on us.

MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

Our next meeting for volunteers and others interested in PCAS is TUESDAY, MARCH 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the Brown Bag restaurant in Monticello. We had a great turnout at our second meeting, in February. We hope to see you tomorrow evening!

HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION DELIVERS

With help from the generous members of the Home Builders Association of East Central Illinois (HBAECI), our goal of a shelter facility at the Pontious Farm is one step closer to reality.

Shelter director Rick Pontious (who also happens to be first vice president of HBAECI) requested permission from that organization to solicit donated building materials and services. Rita Head, who runs HBAECI, said that this request was unprecedented and suggested that Rick present a proposal for consideration by the board at its February 7 meeting.

With the go-ahead from PCAS co-founder Diana McPheeters and help from shelter director Nancee Moster Pontious, who prepared the proposal, Rick went to the HBAECI board meeting armed with copies of the shelter's brochure and the proposal.

Bob Dickey of Eastern Illini Electric Co-op, a director, took one of the brochures and asked, "Did you have to include pictures?", thus demonstrating how difficult it is to say no when staring at photos of dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens who are in need of help. The builders association board voted to let PCAS solicit the association's members for donated materials and services.

Nancee Moster prepared a flyer for that purpose, and sent it to Rita Head at HBAECI, who agreed to donate the cost of printing 400 copies, which were sent out to association members last week. The flyer is on our web site at www.piattanimals.org/media_releases.html#20080303.

Some people/businesses have already donated services and/or materials. The names of these generous donors are available on the Sponsors page of our web site (www.piattanimals.org/sponsors.html). We encourage everyone to thank these donors for their help and, when possible, support their businesses.

Bottom line: We're doing relatively okay on donated services. It's donated materials we really, REALLY need. You can find what we need on the Wish List page of our web site (www.piattanimals.org/wish_list.html).

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITES

There are several opportunities to volunteer in the next several weeks.

First, we will be having a picture session for the public to be photographed with the Easter Bunny. This can be done with or without pets. The event will be held Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Monticello VFW. We need help before, during, and after, including Friday the 14th, to set up.

If you would like to help, contact Diana McPheeters at piattanimals@hotmail.org (217-620-5253) or Barbara Garlick at K9SoundSolutions@hughes.net (217-762-9088).

Also, we are having a Buy a Paw Print campaign: $1 per paw. We need people to cut out paws and distribute them to businesses to sell, and to deliver more paw prints to currently participating businesses to replenish their stock. These can be picked-up at 306 N. Buchanan in Monticello. They will be inside the front door, on a shelf to your right. A sign-in sheet will be there so we don't duplicate work. Check the businesses you are handling, or just cut out paws and return them to us for others to distribute.

If you would like more information about the campaign or are a business owner who'd like to participate, contact Kelly Myers at the Animal Hospital of Monticello (work: 217-762-2144; home: 217-972-2018; e-mail: myers611@hotmail.com).

IDEAS NEEDED!

We will be having a booth at the May Market and need ideas on what to display! Send your suggestions to Diana McPheeters at piattanimals@hotmail.org or Barbara Garlick at K9SoundSolutions@hughes.net.

DID YOU KNOW?

Our web site contains profiles of PCAS volunteers. Our first featured volunteer is Kay Baker of rural White Heath.

Why does Kay support the Piatt County Animal Shelter? Kay learned from her parents to love and respect all living things. She cannot tolerate cruelty to animals and firmly believes every community has a responsibility to alleviate animal suffering.

Read more about Kay at www.piattanimals.org/featured_volunteers.html#Kay Baker.

If you'd like to nominate a volunteer to be profiled, send an e-mail to Nancee Moster (themoster7399@yahoo.com).

FEATURED ADOPTABLE: SWEET PEA

Sweet Pea is a young male orange and white cat who was born to a stray cat in Monticello. He'd love to find a permanent home where he can indulge in his favorite pastime of playing in water. (In case you didn't know, orange males are considered among the easiest-going, friendliest cats around.)

Read more about Sweet Pea at www.piattanimals.org/clients.html#FeaturedPetsLibrary.

Volume 1, No. 2, April 20, 2008

It's been a busy few weeks since our last newsletter. Among other things, our fund-raising committee has been hard at work, and the shelter building project continues. Read all about it, and more …

A MESSAGE FROM OUR VOLUNTEER-IN-CHIEF

Fellow Volunteers,

I greet you with awe and humility. You are the energy that is making the shelter a reality. You truly inspire me with your enthusiasm and never-ending acts of giving. Without you, the animal shelter would never be realized. You are doing this! Isn't it totally amazing what you have made happen — in such a short time! I am stealing your energy at every moment I can to keep moving forward, even as we hit many walls, sometimes more than once, in our effort to make the Piatt County Animal Shelter a reality.

YOU ALL are awe-inspiring and a serious asset to our communities! I salute each and every one of you! Job Well Done!

Sincerely and Respectfully,
Diana McPheeters

WE PUT THE FUN IN FUND-RAISING!

Are you interested in helping raise money for PCAS but don't have the time for a regular commitment? If so, how about volunteering to help at a fund-raising event? The following events need volunteers. Can you help? If so, see the events page on the PCAS web site: http://www.piattanimals.org/events.html.

Business Expo: April 22, at the community building in Monticello, where people can learn more about the Piatt County Animal Shelter's mission and support that mission by purchasing Paw Prints, scrunchy pet collars, pet bandanas, and face painting. This is a five-hour event, and we could use the help of three volunteers for each hour.

May Market: May 3, downtown Monticello: Same deal as the Business Expo, but the Market is an all-day event. The more volunteers, the better! Volunteers do not have to commit to the entire day.

Cookout: June 7 at the Monticello County Market store. Volunteers should report at 9:30 a.m. The cookout lasts until 2:00 p.m. County Market requires four volunteers be present at all times. Grilling experience desired but not required (self-proclaimed "inept" chefs can collect the money). We'll be serving rib-eye sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and soda.

Whether you can volunteer or not, please help spread the word about these fund-raising events. All proceeds go to the building fund for our shelter building at The Pontious Farm.

Our fund-raising committee is also planning other events for later in the year. Here's what's in the works so far:

  • Dinner and silent auction -- possibly at the new Trailblazers facility
  • Bowl-a-thon -- possibly in late second quarter or early third quarter
  • Golf scramble -- possibly in third or fourth quarter
  • 5K/10K run -- possibly in fourth quarter

But wait… there's more: We've got even more fund-raising events!

  • A handcrafted jewelry sale, May 31, Market on the Square, Urbana (http://www.piattanimals.org/events.html#200805b).
  • Pampered Chef online sale in April and May (http://www.piattanimals.org/events.html#200805).
  • Kiss a Duck! Piatt County school principals, including Eric Hillman of Lincoln Grade School in Monticello, dare their students to raise money for the Piatt County Animal Shelter building. Throughout the month of April, students are encouraged raise funds through various activities. Scheduled activities so far include a Hats-On Day at Monticello High School on May 2. Students will be allowed to wear a hat at school that day if they donate money to the shelter. (But the best thing: rumor has it that students can watch their principal kiss a duck, perform the chicken dance, or perhaps do something even wackier – all for a good cause!) More information at http://www.piattanimals.org/events.html#200804.
  • *Dog Obedience Training Classes-a seven-week course beginning May 1 (http://www.piattanimals.org/events.html#20080501).

Check our calendar for more information, updates, and new events: http://www.piattanimals.org/calendar.html.

SHOP ONLINE AND HELP PCAS

Do you shop online? (These days, who doesn't?)

If you want to help PCAS while you shop, go to www.IGive.com. From there, you can shop online at more than 680 stores … and a portion of your purchase will go to PCAS.

Go to www.iGive.com. In the "filter results by" section, select "Illinois" in the state field, "animals" in the cause field, and "Piatt" in the keyword search field. Then hit the "find causes" button, and you'll see Piatt County Animal Shelter. Click on that link, then click on "select this clause."

After you register with the site, you can start shopping at Land's End, Barnes and Noble, The Gap, ebay.com, drugstore.com, expedia.com, and hundreds of other online stores. Up to 26 percent of each purchase will be donated to PCAS … at no extra cost to you!

BUILDING UPDATE

The shelter building project has changed from an expand/remodel job to a demolish/rebuild job. Shelter co-director Rick Pontious brought Jason Nixon of Nixon Construction to look at the honey house, and Jason said it would be more cost-effective to tear down the structure -- but keep the foundation -- and start over from there.

Jason donated his time to prepare a preliminary set of plans. He'll have a finished set as well as a usable/useful materials list soon.

COME TO OUR NEXT VOLUNTEER MEETING…
June 17, 6:30 p.m. at the Brown Bag in Monticello.

MONTICELLO LINCOLN GRADE SCHOOL RAISES OVER $1000

In early April, Monticello Lincoln Grade School Principal Eric Hillman told his kindergartners, first-graders, and second-graders he'd kiss a duck, dance the chicken dance, and possibly perform other "outrageous" acts if they raised money to support the new Piatt County Animal Shelter. His students--and their teachers--accepted the challenge and held up their end of the bargain with their April pocket change drive, raising over $1000! On Friday, May 2, Principal Hillman held up his end of the bargain in a school assembly in the Monticello Lincoln Grade School gymnasium. To see the photos, click here.

MONTICELLO HIGH SCHOOL RAISES $500

Monticello High School students raised $500 to support the new Piatt County Animal Shelter with their Hats On Day fundraiser.  Jennifer Cekander, Student Council advisor, helped organize this simple but extremely effective fundraising event: For a donation of $1, any Monticello High School student could wear a hat to school on Friday, May 2. The Student Council matched all donations as well as held a variety of contests.

Read all about it -- and see Dillon Docherty modeling his award-winning hat -- here.

BUILDING UPDATE

Here's photographic proof that progress is being made! Be sure to check out the large tree transplanting photos and the picture of the feline "snoopervisor" making sure that all work is performed up to standard.

MORE FUN(D)-RAISING

With winter finally behind us and summer fast approaching (there was no spring this year, apparently), fund-raising and shelter building activities are kicking into high gear. Support the Piatt County Animal Shelter by attending events, or, even better, volunteering to work at events.

Remember: All proceeds from these events go toward building the shelter at The Pontious Farm. Here's what's coming up soon:

  • 5/31/08 Handcrafted Jewelry Sale, Market at the Square, Urbana, 7 a.m. to noon
Melissa Treatch creates unique pieces using lampwork glass beads, natural materials (freshwater pearls, wood beads, semi-precious stones, shells, etc.), and crystals. She also crafts wine bottle stoppers and wine charms. For more information, contact our Shelter Manager, Acting Fundraising Chairperson, or Melissa Treatch at matreatch@hotmail.com.
  • 6/2/08 Pizza at Monical's Pizza, Monticello
Buy a pizza or any of the other delicious offerings at Monical's on June 2, and Monical's will donate 20% of your bill to the new Piatt County Animal Shelter. Don't miss this opportunity to help out. This special is good all day on June 2.  Note: you must use a special coupon (click here to view and print coupon) for the donation to apply. (Offer not valid on delivery orders, just dine-in and carry-out.)
  • 6/7/08 Cookout, County Market, Monticello, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Enjoy rib eye sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and sodas -- and support the Piatt County Animal Shelter at the same time!  For more information, contact our Shelter Manager, Acting Fundraising Chairperson, or Wendy Dotson at 217-841-5830 or wendyd902003@yahoo.com.
  • 6/24/08 Ladies Nite Out, Best Western, Monticello, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Unwind with your friends and enjoy some wine and pampering at Ladies Nite Out. Plans are still in the works, but there will be a variety of local vendors offering goods and services (massage, anyone?). Indulge yourself while supporting a good cause. Proceeds go to the Piatt County Animal Shelter. Admission is free. Note: Volunteers are also needed to help with setup and running the event. Contact Toni Wendler at twendler@illinois.edu or 217-390-7059 if you can help.

Other events coming up include

  • Rummage sale sometime this summer; date to be announced
  • Bowl-A-Thon, July 19 at Spare Time Bowl in Decatur
  • Monticello Celebration, October 4

Check our calendar for updates.

DOG OBEDIENCE CLASSES

Barbara Garlick, owner of K9 Sound Solutions, offered  7-week dog obedience training courses, with proceeds going to the Piatt County Animal Shelter. More than a dozen dogs and their human companions signed up for the three levels of courses, which are based on positive correction and reinforcement techniques. That is not to say that there wasn't plenty of time for fun, too!  Enjoy some photos from a recent session.

IT'S RAINING KITTENS ... AND BLUEBERRIES!

The Pontious Farm kicks off blueberry season this Saturday (June 28) with a Kitten Shower and Adopt-a-Thon.

On the same day, the Piatt County Animal Shelter will open their portable facility at The Pontious Farm. Shelter volunteers will be available at the farm every Saturday from June 28th through August 30th to show adoptable animals to potential fur-ever families.

For the shower, donations of pet food and supplies will be happily and gratefully accepted.

Come on out to The Pontious Farm this Saturday. What could be more fun than kittens and blueberries? The shelter has more than 50 cats and kittens who need a permanent home. Bring the whole family and make a day of it!

We also need volunteers to work at the shelter each Saturday through August 30. For information about volunteering (and to sign up for a short training session), contact Diana McPheeters at 217-762-9686 or piattanimals@hotmail.com.

FILL THE BOOT

The Piatt County Animal Shelter is going to "fill the boot" at the July 3 Independence Day Celebration at Lodge Park on July 3. We need a few volunteers to stand at the front gates and solicit donations for the shelter. Can you help for an hour, or for the whole evening? Contact Acting Fundraising Chairperson Kelly Myers (myers611@hotmail.com).

COOKOUT RESCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 30

The weather forced us to cancel our fundraising cookout at County Market a couple of weeks ago. We've rescheduled the event for August 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Enjoy rib eye sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and sodas -- and support the Piatt County Animal Shelter at the same time!

Net proceeds go to building our new shelter facility at The Pontious Farm.

As always, we need volunteers! If you can help for an hour, two hours, or more, contact our Shelter Manager Diana McPheeters (piattanimals@hotmail.com), Acting Fundraising Chairperson Kelly Myers (myers611@hotmail.com), or Wendy Dotson (217-841-5830 or wendyd902003@yahoo.com).

LADIES' NITE NETS FUNDS – AND FUN

Our June 24 Ladies' Nite Out fundraiser was so successful that we're planning to make it a recurring event (next one scheduled for sometime this November). Approximately $1,300 was raised on behalf of the Piatt County Animal Shelter. More than 40 businesses and vendors participated by donating door prizes and/or selling products and donating a portion of their proceeds to the shelter. Over the course of the evening, nearly 100 attendees browsed the vendor tables, noshed on hors d'oeuvres, and sampled a selection of wines.

Our most sincere thanks go to event coordinator Toni Wendler, who spent countless hours organizing Ladies' Nite Out. We also thank the local businesses who participated and, of course, all the ladies who attended and helped make this event a success.

Photos and a complete list of sponsors/vendors are here.

A WELCOME SHOWER

No one is wishing for any more rain these days, but a much-needed shower occurred on June 28 when the Piatt County Animal Shelter held a kitten shower and adopt-a-thon. The fundraiser netted more than $500 in cash and a similar amount in donated supplies. The event took place in our temporary shelter building at The Pontious Farm. Even better, several needy kittens found permanent homes!

BUILDING UPDATE: COMPLICATIONS AROSE, ENSUED, WERE OVERCOME

June 19: Ameren informs Rick Pontious that the power pole next to the concrete pad must be moved to accommodate the roof pitch of the new shelter. Cost: $8,500!

June 23: Rick and Nancee Moster Pontious, and Diana McPheeters agree to move the site of new shelter to the southeast corner of the farm. This is a more easily separable parcel if Rick and Nancee ever decide to sell the farm. But, more importantly, it's nowhere near that @#$%^ power pole!

June 27: The Everlast Portable Building company of Sullivan, Illinois, installs a 20' x 12' building to serve as a temporary facility. The Piatt County Animal Shelter is now in business at the Pontious Farm on Saturdays. HOORAY! (See progress pictures here.)

July 14: Building permit approved. Time to break ground!

OTHER SUCCESSES

Shelter Manager Diana McPheeters reports the following good news:

  • We have been successful in our kitten adoptions: as of last week, six cats found homes, and more adoptions are pending.
  • We received approximately $165 from our Monical's Pizza June 2 fundraiser. Thanks go to all who participated and to Monical's Pizza in Monticello.
  • Our July 12 rummage sale netted around $380.

COOKOUT AUGUST 30

Don't forget our August 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the County Market in Monticello. Enjoy rib eye sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and sodas -- and support the Piatt County Animal Shelter at the same time! Net proceeds go to building our new shelter facility at The Pontious Farm.

Also, we need volunteers to assist at the cookout. If you can help for an hour or two, or more, contact Shelter Manager Diana McPheeters (piattanimals@hotmail.com), Acting Fundraising Chairperson Kelly Myers (myers611@hotmail.com), or Wendy Dotson (217-841-5830 or wendyd902003@yahoo.com).
